Advising Undecided & Undeclared Students

The number of Undeclared students entering the university has grown consistently over the past several years. As such, it is increasingly important to understand this population and how they are best supported. This session will explain the difference between being undeclared and being undecided. We will review the advising cycle for Undeclared students from matriculation to declaration. And we will discuss strategies for helping students declare confidently into a program that is well suited to their interests, abilities, and values.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the difference between an Undeclared and an Undecided student.
  2. Know when to refer students to CAS Undeclared and when to refer them to Exploratory Advising.
  3. Understand the timeline and process for advising Undeclared students into a major program of study.
  4. Identify successful strategies for helping students select a major and when to implement them.
