Incorporating Informational Interviewing Discussions into Advising Appointments
During advising appointments, students often discuss their interests in exploring different career paths, wanting to know more about specific graduate/professional programs, or wanting to learn more about a specific organization. As an advisor, you can encourage them to utilize informational interviewing to make informed decisions about their careers and academic journeys. This presentation will cover informational interviewing, different scenarios where informational interview is appropriate, strategies on how to discuss informational interviews in advising appointments, how students can identify and contact individuals for informational interviews, and sample questions students may ask in their informational interviews as it pertains to their personal and professional goals.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1) Define informational interviewing
2) Identify situations in an advising appointment when a student may benefit from conducting informational interviews
3) Communicate strategies for informational interviewing to students in advising appointments when applicable
